Abstract


This chapter will be an update of chapter seven in "Education for a Digital World". It will define Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and related software tools such as Learning Content Management Systems (LCMSs), Authoring tools and Virtual Classrooms. It will describe LMSs used both for corporate training and formal education environments and the features and differences between them. It will discuss the factors and decision points involved in choosing an LMS. The revised chapter will provide updates on current trends:
  • Industry consolidation
  • Web 2.0 (social networking) tools
  • Talent Management
  • Mobile learning
  • SaaS (Software as a service)
  • Open source software
